New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2019: Our Must-Try Trends

14.02.2019 | Blog

Fashionistas from near and far have descended on Manhattan the past few days for a visit to their mothership – New York Fashion Week 2019.  The shows have not disappointed, and we’re spotting trends on the runway we can’t wait to rock in real life.  Let’s get way ahead of the fashion and beauty curve and give these must-try trends for next Autumn/Winter a whirl today.

FOR THE LADIES:

1. CANDY COLORS

Satisfy your fashion sweet tooth with vibrant shades typically reserved for Spring.  Thanks to lines like Prabal Gurung and Tibi, brights will be everywhere – from accessories to apparel.  A great way to incorporate vivid color into your winter wardrobe is to sport a boldly-hued coat.  They are eye-catching, distinctive, and can make any basic ensemble something special

2. DARING FLORALS

Also a Spring-in-Winter trend, eye-catching floral prints will brighten a gloomy Winter’s day like nobody’s business.  Collections from the likes of Carolina Herrera and Red Valentino featured primarily high-contrast or large-scale florals.  We especially love the trend in blouses.  They can be tucked into a pant or pencil for work, layered under a knit or jacket, or half-tucked into a jean for the weekend.

3. BLACK LIQUID EYELINER

Subtle or daring, brands like Phillip Plein and Anna Sui were all about this lined-eye.  Clearly a swipe of black on the upper lash line injects some glamour into everyday life.  Although the technique may take some practice, the result is well-worth your efforts.  Try a subtle line for work and amp it up at night with a cat-eye effect.  This great article on makeup.com (https://www.makeup.com/how-to-apply-a-cat-eye-for-your-eye-shape) breaks it down and recommends the best version for your eye shape.

CALLING ALL GENTLEMEN:

1. THE FASHION PUFFER

You most likely already have a version of this practical staple in your closet, but lines like Todd Snyder and Tom Ford are taking the puffer to a whole new level of style.  The fashion puffer is all about the unexpected – from color, to fabric, to details.  It’s a great, versatile purchase as it dresses up a usually very casual piece.  Who wouldn’t want a more stylish puffer?

2. BLACK SUIT

Although in recent years, we have given preferential treatment to the blue and gray varieties, major houses from Paris Fashion Week like Dior and Valentino are setting the black suit up for a big comeback, and New York designers are following “suit”.  With contemporary details and a slimmer fit, the black suit is about to be super-cool.  The key to the modern black suit look is making sure all elements reflect the details of now – look for thinner lapels, a 2-button jacket stance, little to no pant break, and definitely no cuff.  Pairing the suit with darker-hued shirts and ties will make the fashion-makers proud.

3. VELVET

It may not be a fabric you’ve worn before but brands like Joseph Abboud and Krammer & Stoudt want you to get on the velvet train.  Although it does not work for daytime looks, it is all the rage for formal events.  Try switching out your standard tuxedo jacket with a velvet version.  Feeling extra bold?  Go for a color.  If you’d like to start smaller, pair a velvet smoking shoe with that tux, or wear your old reliable suit with a velvet tie (just not at the same time).
